Project Case Study: MaD4221 Well

(China Petroleum Xinjiang Oilfield – Mahu Block Development)

1. Project Information

Project Name: First development directional well in the Mahu Block of PetroChina Xinjiang Oilfield.

Well Name: MaD4221

Operator: PetroChina Xinjiang Oilfield Company

Time: June 16 – July 17, 2015

Location: Mahu Area, Wuerhe, Xinjiang

Structural Position: Western Slope of Mahu Sag, Central Depression, Junggar Basin

2. Project Overview

MaD4221 is the first development directional well in the Mahu Block.

Total Depth (TD): 3950 m

Interval: 3100–3950 m

Design Inclination: 19.9°

As an experimental and development well, it was designed to collect extensive drilling parameters to optimize subsequent operations in this new block.

3. Operation Summary

Challenge & Solution:

The block features complex formations and challenging high‑density drilling fluids.

Prior to using our equipment, three consecutive runs with competitor MWD tools suffered from key ejection, severe erosion, and signal loss, severely impacting operations.

Zhongtian Qiming MWD‑350 was deployed and successfully completed the well.

Operational Efficiency:

To increase ROP, the operator frequently changed BHA configurations and used various speed‑up tools.

Despite these complex changes, our instruments operated stably, providing high‑quality measurement data and supporting multi‑tool coordination.

Performance Data:

Total Runs: 4 trips

Tool Operation Time per Run: 180–240 hours

4. Client Feedback

The well was completed on July 17, 2015, without any tripping due to instrument failure.

Our tools effectively extended the life of other drilling tools and reduced single‑well costs.

Logging personnel obtained accurate geological data, laying a solid foundation for future wells.

Result: Subsequent wells in the block saved an average of 8 days in drilling cycle time, significantly lowering costs.

This project demonstrated the high efficiency, accuracy, and adaptability of Zhongtian Qiming instruments under harsh conditions.
